CHAPTER INFORMATION
Welcome to New
Chapter
Welcome to the new AP/MTT joint chapter in
Huntsville, Alabama, USA. The new Chapter Chair is Dr. Hans Schantz. His email address is hans.schantz@timedomain.com.
Chapter
Spotlight
A new section of the Chapter News, called the “Chapter Spotlight” is being added, starting with this issue. The purpose of this section is to show any pictures that the chapters wish to share with other chapters and AP-S members, commemorating any special events associated with the chapters. I invite the chapters to send such pictures to me, either by email or by airmail.
Invitation to
Judge
As a reminder to the Chapter Chairs, if you would like to participate in the judging panel for the AP-S Best Chapter Award for the year 2001, please let me know as soon as possible. I would like to assemble the panel and begin the judging process by the end of March 2002. Judges will be asked to look over all of the submitted annual reports and then pick their top three selections. This information from all of the panel members will then be tabulated to select the overall winner of the Best Chapter Award. The award presentation will be made during the 2002 IEEE AP-S Symposium in San Antonio, TX, held during June16-21, 2002.
Hints on Chapter Meetings and Activities
The following
IEEE Web address gives helpful hints on planning successful chapter meetings
and on planning chapter activities. You may find in interesting. (Remember also
that there is a link on the AP-S Web page that provides a connection to IEEE
chapter and section support.) http://www.ieee.org/organizations/rab/scs/pubs/Successful_Chpt_Mtgs/cover.html
The updated Chapter Handbook for 2002 has been sent to all the chapters. It is also available on the AP-S Web site (www.ieeeaps.org). Please let me know if you see any corrections that need to be made -- thank you.
Reminder About Annual Report Forms
The Annual Report forms were due (emailed back to me) at the end of February. If you have not already turned in one for your chapter, please do so as soon as possible. These forms will be used for the Best Chapter Award contest. Completion of these forms is also a prerequisite for receiving any type of financial support from AP-S.
Do you need a place to host your Chapters Webpage? The IEEE has made space available on its servers so your web page will be available 24 hours a day all year round. This “Entity Web Hosting” is free of charge to IEEE Regions, Sections, Councils, Societies, Chapters and Student Branches. For more information, visit www.ewh.ieee.org
Do you know if you are contacting all of the Members in your Chapter? You can get a list containing contact information for every Member if you contact your Section representative who has access to your Member data! Each Section has designated one volunteer to manage the SAMIEEE (Section Access to Member Information) files. Simply request a report listing the names and contact information for the Members in your Chapter! If you would like more information on SAMIEEE go to: http://www.ieee.org/organizations/rab/samieee_info/index.html
Symposium Grants from the IEEE
If your chapter is organizing a technical conference, and needs support, you may be interested in the following opportunity from the IEEE. The following message is taken directly from the February 2002 IEEE SCOOP publication (Vicki Waldman, Editor).
Based on the success of last year's program, the
IEEE Regional Activities Board has approved limited funding a second year for
Technical Symposia grants of up to $500 for the year 2002. The purpose of the
program is to encourage IEEE geographic units to provide an opportunity for
members to participate in more intensive technical presentations than is possible
in a typical meeting, but short of a full-scale conference.
Guidelines are as follows:
1.
The
Symposium is expected to last a full day and should include at least 5 hours
(300 minutes) of technical presentation.
2. The Symposium should be planned or supported by at least one IEEE Technical Society or Chapter.
3.
The
proposal should include sufficient information about technical content,
possible speakers, and probable attendees to permit evaluation of the proposal
4.
The
proposal must include a budget for the Symposium.
5.
The
grant will be provided after the IEEE RAB/TAB Section/ Chapter Support
Committee approves a proposal.
6.
A
report must be provided within one month after the Symposium occurs. The report
may be brief, but should include specific information about the program and a
financial summary.
To apply, Sections and Chapters submitting proposals must be active and in good standing (all required reports current). For more information or to send proposals, contact Tracy Hawkins at t.hawkins@ieee.org or via fax to +1-732-463-9359.

CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT
As noted in the February 2002 issue of the Chapter News, there were five special-project awards given out by AP-S to five of our chapters for the year 2001. One of the projects, by the East Ukraine chapter, was a research project on “Topics in the History of Radio Physics and Microwave Electronics in Ukraine from the 1920's to the 1970's.” The Chapter Chair is Dr. Yevgeny Kuleshov, and the leader of the team doing the research on this project is Dr. Alexei Kostenko of the National Academy of Sciences of the Ukraine, In Kharkov, Ukraine. The total award was for $500. Shown below is a picture of Dr. Kuleshov handing to Dr. Koseuko a 2001 special-project grant certificate, to commemorate the occasion.
