Congratulations to the Mumbai Chapter
Congratulations to the AP/ED Mumbai (Bombay) Chapter for winning the best chapter award for 2001 from the Electron Devices Society. The Vice Chair of the Chapter, Prof. Ram Gopal Rao, went to Washington, D.C. to receive the prize on Dec. 13, 2001.
Annual Report
Forms
The Annual Report forms will be sent out shortly by email to all of the active chapters (they should be sent out by the end of January). I would ask the Chapter Chairs to please fill out these forms as best they can and return them to me by the end of February 2002. These forms will be used during the Best Chapter Award contest. Completion of these forms is also a prerequisite for receiving any type of financial support from AP-S.
Time to
Request Support
Now would be a good time for the Chapter Chairs to send their requests for financial support. Chapters that need financial assistance may request annual support by sending me an email, indicating the amount that is requested and the intended used for the support. Annual support is limited to $1000 for an AP-only chapter and $500 for a joint chapter. Chapter Chairs who wish to travel to San Antonio to attend the 2002 AP-S meeting may request travel support in the form of the Chapter Chair Travel Grant. This award is for $1,000, and may be received only once for each Chapter Chair, during their term of office. The limit is five awards per year. If your chapter is contemplating any special projects that might require support beyond what would normally be covered by the annual support, your chapter may be eligible for special-project support. This support is limited to $500 for any given chapter. The limit for this support is also five awards per year. Chapter Chairs who are interested in either travel grant support or special-project support should contact me by email and explain the circumstances. Finally, Chapter Chairs should remember to take advantage of the IEEE AP-S Distinguished Lecturer program, since this allows chapters to arrange for speakers (maximum of two per year for each chapter) at no cost to the chapter.
Report from
AdCom
A report on the AP-S chapter activity for the year 2001 was given at the AdCom meeting in Boulder, CO, on Jan. 12, 2002. A brief summary is given below.
1. We presently have 62 active chapters. The chapters are now in the process of preparing annual reports for the year 2001.
2. Nanjing was awarded the Best Chapter Award for the year 2000. The award was made at the Boston AP-S meeting.
3. The process of selecting the Best Chapter Award for the year 2001 will begin soon after the reports are in.
4. The AP-S Chapter Handbook is now being updated for the year 2002.
5. The total expenditures for 2001 were $14,450. A breakdown of this support is listed below.
Annual support: $8200 (16 chapters)
Special project support: $2300 (5 chapters)
Chapter Chair Travel Grant: $3000 (3 chapters)
Best Chapter Award: $1000 (1 chapter)
The three chapters receiving the Chapter Chair Travel Grant Award for 2001 were Mumbai (Bombay), Nanjing, and Turkey.
A summary of the five special-projects that were supported for 2001 is given below.
EAST UKRAINE ($500)
Topics in the History of Radio Physics and Microwave Electronics in Ukraine from the 1920's to the 1970's.
HONG KONG ($500)
The Second IEEE Hong Kong MTT/AP/LEOS Postgraduate Conference, September 29, 2001, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
LOS ANGELES ($500)
A Tour of the Deep Space Network at Goldstone, California.
MOSCOW ($500)
Establish special IEEE office in MPEI-TU. This is a two-room working space in the MPEI-TU Antennas & Propagation Department.
ST. PETERSBURG ($300)
All-Russia student conference on
Radiophysics.
Budget for 2002
At the AdCom meeting, the Chapter Activities budget for the year 2002 was revised, and set at $17,900.
Correction
In the August issue of the Chapter News the dates of all the events for the Toronto chapter were listed as being in the year 2001. However, all of the listed events were actually in the year 2000, except for the first two.
