CHAPTER INFORMATION

Welcome to New Chapter

Welcome to the new Antennas and Propagation/Microwave Theory and Techniques Societies joint Chapter of the Queensland Section. The chapter was officially formed on April 16, 2002. The new Chapte chair is Prof. Marek E. Bialkowski, School of ITEE, Univ. of Queensland, Brisbane, Qld 4072, Australia. His email address is meb@itee.uq.edu.au.

Chapter Lunch

For those Chapter Chairs (and other chapter officers) who will be attending the IEEE AP-S/URSI Intl. Symposium in San Antonio, we will be having our annual Chapter Chair Luncheon on Thursday, June 20, from 12:00-1:00 p.m., in the Pecos room of the Hyatt hotel. Please send me an email to let me know if you can attend (this is not a necessary prerequisite, it simply helps with the planning).

New Item on Web Page

A document has been added to the AP-S Chapter Web page, called “The IEEE and Resources for Chapter Chairs.” This document was provided courtesy of April Nakamura (Chapter Coordinator at IEEE), with modifications made to provide some additional information for AP-S Chapter Chairs. To get to the AP-S Chapter Web page, go to the AP-S Web page (http://www.ieeeaps.org/) and then click on “Local Chapters”.

Update Address Information

Now that we are well into the new year, and new chapter officers have been elected, I would ask that all chapter chairs visit the AP-S chapter web page to verify if the address information for your chapter is valid. If not, please send me an email to let me know. Thank you!

Notes from IEEE

The following news item, taken from the April and May 2002 issues of SCOOP, may be of interest to Chapter Officers.

(1)   ONLINE RESOURCE DIRECTORY TO ASSIST VOLUNTEERS

Maybe the information you need is on the web...but where?  An online directory to help IEEE volunteers obtain information on publishing, Societies, Sections, Chapters, Student Branches, conferences, standards development, professional development, and organizational unit board activities is available at http://www.ieee.org/organizations/vols/.

For more information, contact John Wettlaufer, IEEE Technical Activities, +1 732 465  7809 or by e-mail to j.wettlaufer@ieee.org.

(2) TECHNICAL SYMPOSIA GRANTS OFFERED AGAIN IN 2002

Based on the success of last year's program, the IEEE Regional Activities Board has approved limited funding a second year for Technical Symposia grants of up to $500 for the year 2002.  The purpose of the program is to encourage IEEE geographic units to provide an opportunity for members to participate in more intensive technical presentations than is possible in a typical  meeting, but short of a full-scale conference.

Guidelines are as follows:

1.      The Symposium is expected to last a full day and should include at least 5 hours (300 minutes) of technical presentation.

  1. The Symposium should be planned or supported by at least one IEEE Technical Society or Chapter.

  1. The proposal should include sufficient information about technical content, possible speakers, and probable attendees to permit evaluation of the proposal

  1. The proposal must include a budget for the Symposium.

  1. The grant will be provided after the IEEE RAB/TAB Section/ Chapter Support Committee approves a proposal.

  1. A report must be provided within one month after the Symposium occurs. The report may be brief, but should include specific information about the program and a financial summary.

To apply, Sections and Chapters submitting proposals must be active and in good standing (all required reports current).  For a submission questionnaire, contact Tracy Hawkins at t.hawkins@ieee.org or via fax to +1-732 463 9359.
