Publication of IEEE Std 149-2021: IEEE Recommended Practice for Antenna Measurements

IEEE Std 149-2021™: IEEE Recommended Practice for Antenna Measurements describing recommended practices for the measurement of antenna transmitting and receiving properties has been recently published: https://standards.ieee.org/ieee/149/6667.

The standard was initially approved by IEEE in 1977, approved by ANSI in 2003 and reaffirmed in 2008. A major revision of the standard was required to reflect the state-of-the-art in antenna measurement. The Project Authorization Request was approved by the IEEE Standards Association Standards Board on 5 December 2015.

The working group undertook the arduous task of revising the standard during the past six years. IEEE Std 149-2021 was approved for publication on 23 September 2021 and was published on 18 February 2022.

The standard focuses on the fundamental property of any antenna, which is its radiation pattern. The measurement of radiation patterns in an antenna test facility is discussed. The design of antenna test facilities is described along with instrumentation requirements for the proper operation of the antenna facility, directions for the evaluation of an (existing) range, and the operation of ranges is discussed. References are provided that are illustrative of measurement techniques and in which details may be found. The revision of IEEE Std 149-2021 has been coordinated with the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Standards Committee (AP-S/SC).

An invitation is hereby extended to the users of this standard to contribute to the next revision if they observe deficiencies or have ideas for an improvement.
